WHAT WE BELIEVE
Westminster Confession of Faith
"When the Presbyterian Church in the United States of America was formed in 1788, it adopted (with minor revisions) the Westminster Confession of Faith, Larger and Shorter Catechisms (1647), as its secondary standards (the Bible itself being the only infallible rule of faith and practice). Officers in the Presbyterian Church in America take a vow to “sincerely receive and adopt” these confessional documents “as containing the system of doctrine taught in the Holy Scriptures.”

GOD AND MAN
God - God is holy (Isaiah 6:1-4) and just (Revelation 19:2). He is also merciful and loving (Ephesians 2:4)
Man - To the contrary, man is sinful (Ephesians 2:1-3, Romans 3:11, 23)

JUDGEMENT
The implication of this contrast is that man is separated from God. Not only is he separated, but he will also be judged (Hebrews 9:27). This judgement will not be made against a bell curve, but rather against a measure of absolute perfection (Matthew 5:48), and the result of that judgement is death (Romans 6:23a).

JESUS THE SAVIOR
With the stakes this high, man by himself is without hope. The good news of the gospel, though, tells us that man is not by himself. “For God so loved the world, that he gave his only Son, that whoever believes in him should not perish but have eternal life.” (John 3:16) Jesus Christ came to live the perfect life and to become the perfect sacrifice, on our behalf (2 Corinthians 5:21). That sacrifice is a gift that we receive by grace alone, through faith alone, in Christ alone (Ephesians 2:8-9).

MAN'S RESPONSE
This is a gift that must be received, though, and we receive this gift when we come to faith in Christ and repent of our sins (John 1:12; Mark 1:15).

The beauty and fullness of the gospel is that God gives us a new heart so that we can accept this gift of his grace (Regeneration or new birth), He cleanses us from all unrighteousness and sin (Justification or forgiveness), and He gives us His Spirit to live within us, that we might become more and more like him (Sanctification or growth in Christ).
