My wife will say she does not like surprises. But do you know what I have learned over the past 17 years of marriage? She loves it when I plan for her. She loves it when I am intentional. While I’ve still got a lot of growing to do in the way I intentionally plan for her, I do see that it speaks to her. Maybe it speaks to you as well when someone lovingly and intentionally makes plans for you…particularly when those plans come at great cost to the person doing the planning.
This is actually a pretty good description of what we see throughout Hebrews as the Word speaks to our covenant making, covenant keeping God. In Hebrews 9:15, we are told that Jesus is the mediator of the new covenant, so that those who are called may receive the promised eternal inheritance. As the chapter progresses, we begin to see how thoughtfully Jesus has planned for His bride. We see how intentional He was. More importantly, we see in graphic detail how costly all of these plans were for Him as He lavishly provided for His bride.
Friends, we will gather this week for worship just as we do each week. As we look to God’s Word, we will continue in Hebrews, reading and preaching from Hebrews 9:15-28. It is a passage that speaks much of blood…ultimately His blood. It is Jesus’ blood that seals all of His promises to His bride. It is Jesus’ blood that purifies His bride, making her beautiful. And it is Jesus’ blood that saves His bride from the judgement she deserves.
Of course, when we speak of Jesus’ bride, we speak of the Church. The Church is made up of those whom He has called, those whom He has loved from before the beginning of time. His is an intentional, loving, and costly plan…for you and for me. It is a plan, and a Savior, worthy of our praise. Won’t you join us this week as we worship this Savior.
